The National Association for Amateur Radio characterizes amateur or ham radio as “a popular hobby and a service” that allows enthusiasts to enjoy their “deep appreciation of the radio art.”
It’s not a typical hobby for a 10-year-old girl, but for one Trenton, Ga., resident, ham radio is a fascinating pastime for which she now holds a license.   
Sierra Saylors recently earned her initial status as a certified amateur radio operator, passing the technician exam last week, and will soon begin the process of obtaining her general license.
“I like that I’m meeting new people and getting to talk to other people,” she said...
